Quarter - round mouldings are commonly used to cover the expansion gap between the floor and the wall. For example, in a hardwood - floored room, the floorboards need space to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. The quarter - round moulding is installed along the perimeter of the room, hiding this gap and providing a finished look. It also protects the edges of the floor from damage caused by foot traffic or vacuum cleaners.
When different types of flooring materials meet, such as where a hardwood floor meets a tile floor in a doorway or between rooms, quarter - round mouldings can be used to create a smooth transition. They can be stained or painted to match the color of the adjacent flooring, making the junction between the two materials look seamless.
